Chisholm’s Phenomenal Argument Revisited: a Dilemma for Perdurantism
نویسنده
چکیده
According to perdurantism, objects persist by being spread out over time just as composite three-dimensional objects are spread out over space. Just as a composite threedimensional object is spread out over space by having spatial parts, objects persist, according to perdurantism, by having temporal parts. Perdurantism can be stated more precisely by saying what exactly a temporal part is. In the sequel, Theodore Sider’s definition of ‘instantaneous temporal part’ shall be assumed:

The Rotating Discs Argument Defeated
The rotating discs argument (RDA) against perdurantism has been mostly discussed by metaphysicians, though the argument of course appeals to ideas from classical mechanics, especially about rotation. In contrast, I assess the RDA from the perspective of the philosophy of physics. I argue for three main conclusions. The first conclusion is that the RDA can be formulated more strongly than is usu...
متن کاملOn the Persistence of Homogeneous Matter
Some recent philosophical debate about persistence has focussed on an argument against perdurantism that discusses rotating perfectly homogeneous discs (the ‘rotating discs argument’; RDA). The argument has been mostly discussed by metaphysicians, though it appeals to ideas from classical mechanics, especially about rotation. In contrast, I assess the RDA from the perspective of the philosophy ...
متن کاملThe Phenomenal Concept Strategy: a reply to Chalmers
A powerful reply to a range of familiar anti-physicalist arguments has recently been developed. According to this reply, our possession of phenomenal concepts can explain the facts that the anti-physicalist claims can only be explained by a non-reductive account of phenomenal consciousness. Chalmers (2006) argues that the phenomenal concept strategy is doomed to fail. This paper presents the ph...
متن کاملThere Are No Phenomenal Concepts
It has long been widely agreed that some concepts can be possessed only by those who have undergone a certain type of phenomenal experience. Orthodoxy among contemporary philosophers of mind has it that these phenomenal concepts provide the key to understanding many disputes between physicalists and their opponents, and in particular offer an explanation of Mary’s predicament in the situation e...
متن کاملModeling Chisholm’s Logic of Obligation, Requirement, and Defeat
It is well known that Standard Deontic Logic (SDL) suffers from a number of troubling paradoxes. Despite many years of efforts to resolve the paradoxes, there is no consensus that such efforts have been successful, and indeed [Hansen, 2006] argues that the paradoxes are “alive and kicking.” These continued difficulties with SDL motivate careful study of nonstandard deontic logics, such as Chish...
